New AC Milan GM: Extending Donnarumma is 'our priority'

AC Milan's new general manager, Marco Fassone, knows how important young goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is to the Italian club.

It's why signing the 18-year-old to a new contract before his current deal expires in 2018 is one of Fassone's top priorities, even as Milan undergoes a transition under new management following the €740-million sale of the club to Chinese-owned company Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux.

Though the club's new owners seem ambitious, many fans consider the future of Donnarumma - and how his contract negotiations are handled - as a sign of things to come. Understanding that, Fassone was quick to affirm he won't be taking the matter lightly.

"It's our priority," Fassone said of signing Donnarumma to a new deal, as quoted by ESPN FC. "We've also spoken about it already with the president. We want to resolve this quickly and make Gigio a pillar for our future. There are some contracts and discussions which will definitely be our priority."

Another priority is securing the future of head coach Vincenzo Montella. While Fassone acknowledged Roberto Mancini's availability - telling reporters he hoped the former Internazionale and Manchester City boss is "back coaching very soon" - he made clear Milan would be sticking with its man.

"I am happy to answer this: he has our faith and appreciation," Fassone said of Montella. "We also welcomed (him) last June. We have total backing and support for Montella."
