Trinity Gay, 15-year-old daughter of Olympic sprinter Tyson, shot dead
Trinity Gay, the 15-year-old daughter of Olympic sprinter Tyson Gay, was killed in a shooting Sunday morning in Lexington, Kentucky.
Authorities said Gay was fatally shot around 4:00 a.m. local time during an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles in a restaurant parking lot. The Fayette County coroner's office said she was pronounced dead after being taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Her father, who is from Lexington, confirmed the tragic passing while speaking with local television station Lex 18 News.
"She didn't make it. I'm so confused. She was just here last week for fall break. It's so crazy. I have no idea what happened," the 34-year-old was quoted as saying.
In a text message to The Associated Press, the Olympian's agent, Mark Wetmore, also confirmed the death of Gay's teenage daughter.
Gay, the U.S. 100m record-holder, competed as a member of the 4x100m relay team at the Rio Olympics this past summer; the nation's track and field organization tweeted its condolences to the three-time Olympian:
Sending our thoughts & prayers to @TysonLGay & his loved ones as they mourn the tragic & senseless loss of his daughter, Trinity.
