Blue Jays' Travis leaves after 5 innings with shoulder injury
Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis left Monday's game against the New York Yankees to begin the sixth inning after injuring his shoulder on a swing in the fourth, manager John Gibbons told reporters postgame.
On a 3-2 count, Travis swung through a high fastball from Yankees reliever Kirby Yates and appeared to be in discomfort. He returned to the field in the fifth inning, but not did bat in the bottom of the frame, and was replaced in the lineup by Darwin Barney to begin the sixth inning.
Shoulder injuries are a concern for the Blue Jays infielder. After having an impressive rookie season where he slashed .303/.360/.495 cut short due to pain, Travis underwent surgery in Nov. 2015 to fuse bones in his shoulder, sidelining him for the first two months of the 2016 season.
After recovering from the procedure, Travis has continued to be a spark in the Blue Jays' heavy-hitting lineup, batting .299/.331/.447 in his sophomore season.
