49ers GM says Anthony Davis remains 'retired' following Twitter rant
A day before the first round of the NFL draft, retired former San Francisco 49ers tackle Anthony Davis went on a Twitter rant stating the 49ers should draft a tackle and voiced his displeasure with how the organization is run.
Davis retired during the 2015 offseason. He has been rumored to return all along, but has been non-committal on any sort of timeline. San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke is tired of waiting and isn't counting on Davis returning anytime soon.
"There’s no decision to be made," Baalke told Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, when asked if the team has made a decision about his status. "Right now, he's not in the National Football League. He's retired. So there's no reason to even speculate on what we're going to do or what we might do.
"He's got to be reinstated into the league and that's a process that takes some time. He doesn't put in and a day later he's reinstated. There's a process that he has to go through."
The 49ers did not take a tackle with their top-10 pick and instead took defensive end DeForest Buckner. It was the second year in a row the 49ers took a defensive end from Oregon in the first round.
San Francisco did trade back into the back of the first round to select Stanford guard Joshua Garnett, potentially signaling that they are preparing for Davis to stay retired.
