Former Montana State and Texas cornerback Eryon Barnett has died.

The deputy coroner at the Gallatin County Coroner's office confirmed to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle's Parker Gabriel that Barnett died at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in the hospital.

The cause of death has yet to be determined, with an autopsy not likely to be completed until Monday.

Barnett was just 24 years old.

"We're heartbroken by the loss of Eryon Barnett," said Montana State head coach Rob Ash in a statement released by the school. "He fought through so much as a football player, and always showed a resilient spirit that everyone that knew him drew from and admired."

Barnett revealed during the Bobcats' pro day in March that he missed part of fall practice and two games in November due to pancreatitis.

"I was going through the pancreatitis thing where I missed a couple of games and then in fall camp as well," explained Barnett. 'I actually just got out of the hospital last week, so usually I was supposed to have this week off and just rest and be ready for today, but I've been pretty much grinding out this last week."

Barnett joined Texas out of high school, and redshirted his freshman year in 2009. He appeared in seven games for special teams the next season, before a knee injury forced him to miss the entire 2011 season. He transferred to Montana State in 2012.

In his sixth year of eligibility, Barnett recorded 38 tackles, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in his senior season.

The Longhorns football program and former head coach Mack Brown tweeted condolences.
