Toledo coach Matt Campbell will no longer lead team in pregame prayer

After receiving a complaint, Toledo head football coach Matt Campbell will no longer lead his team in prayer before games.

"To ensure UT football continues to bring people together, players will determine on their own any personal preparation methods to help them mentally prepare to play the game we love," Campbell said in a statement obtained by the Toledo Blade's Nicholas Piotrowicz.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Wisconsin, sent a letter in May to the university calling Campbell's prayer a constitutional violation, citing a video of the coach leading the team in the Lord's Prayer before a 2012 game against Bowling Green.

Campbell has been head coach of the Rockets since 2011, and signed an extension through 2020 after the 2014 season.

The coach noted in his statement that his values have not changed.

"I won't change my values or who I am. I'm so proud of the positive choices our student-athletes make to represent the University, the Toledo community, and the Rocket Nation around the globe," he said. "And I know this community is also proud of our team."
