Report: Greg Ward Jr. named Houston's starting quarterback

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Greg Ward Jr. has been named Houston's starting quarterback in place of regular pivot John O'Korn, according to the Houston Chronicle

The Cougars take on Memphis on the road this Saturday.

Ward, usually a receiver, must have convinced Houston coach Tony Levine after a last-second, diving touchdown attempt that nearly saw the Cougars beat South Florida last week.

“This decision is more of a reflection how Greg performed in his last game,” Levine said.

Ward fumbled in the endzone after he tumbled to the ground, but the effort was worth noting. It would have put Houston up 18-17 with very little time on the clock for USF to work with.

Ward started getting repetitions at quarterback in practice last week, his first significant work at the position since the Cougars’ bowl preparation last December, reported the Houston Chronicle.

“All I’m trying to do is help my team win,” said Ward. He amassed more than 4,200 yards and 39 touchdowns as a senior at John Tyler High School. “The decision they made is what we’re all living with and we’re moving on from here.”

Levine said O’Korn will likely still see playing time against Memphis.

Markeith Ambles will take over Ward’s starting outside wide receiver spot.
