Louisville names Will Gardner starting quarterback for season opener

With just over a week to go until opening kickoff, the Louisville Cardinals announced their starting quarterback for the season opener.

Gardner has some big shoes to try and fill, as he will look to replace three-year starter Teddy Bridgewater, who is now with the Minnesota Vikings. The sophomore Garnder earned the job over senior Brett Nelson and reshirt freshman Kyle Bolin.

With Gardner announced as the starter versus the Hurricanes, it means both quarterbacks in the season opener will be making their first career starts. Earlier Sunday Miami named true freshman Brad Kaaya as the starting QB.

As Bridgewater's backup last season, Gardner made brief appearances in six games. He went 8-of-12 for 112 yards with two touchdowns in his limited playing time.

The Cardinals and Hurricanes open the season Monday, Sept. 1 in Louisville.
