Oklahoma State fires Gundy in 21st season
Oklahoma State fired Mike Gundy amid his 21st season as its head coach, the program announced Tuesday.
Cowboys offensive coordinator Doug Meacham will replace Gundy on an interim basis, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Oklahoma State has struggled mightily since the start of 2024, losing 12 of their last 13 games and going 4-11 over their previous 15 contests. They also haven't beaten an FBS opponent since September 2024.
With speculation mounting about his job security, Gundy addressed the situation Monday, saying: "When I was hired here to take this job, ever since that day, I've put my heart and soul into this, and I will continue to do that until at some point, if I say I don't want to do it or if somebody else says we don't want you to do it."
As part of his buyout, Oklahoma State owes Gundy $15 million for firing him before the end of the 2025 season. He agreed to a restructured contract earlier this year that included a $1-million pay cut.
The 58-year-old was the second-longest tenured FBS coach behind Iowa's Kirk Ferentz. Hired by the Cowboys in 2005, Gundy produced his best season in 2011, when he led the program to the Big 12 title with a 12-1 record.
Gundy's firing comes one day after the 18th anniversary of his infamous, "I'm a man, I'm 40" rant.

Gundy finishes his Cowboys tenure with a 170-90 record and three Big-12 Coach of the Year awards.
"College football has changed drastically in the last few years, and the investment needed to compete at the highest level has never been more important," Cowboys athletic director Chad Weiberg said in a statement.
"As we search for the next head coach of Cowboy Football, we are looking for someone who can lead our program in this new era."
