Notre Dame's football program will be punished after recently violating recruiting contact rules, the NCAA announced Thursday.

The school and NCAA enforcement staff agreed that a former Fighting Irish assistant coach had impermissible contact with a prospect, meeting privately at the player's high school prior to the completion of his junior year.

The assistant also exchanged impermissible text messages with another prospect on 10 occasions, according to the NCAA.

Notre Dame's penalties include a one-year probation period, a $5,000 fine, a six-month show-cause order for the unnamed coach, and a seven-day off-campus recruiting ban during the 2020-21 academic year.

If the Irish are unable to serve a penalty due to COVID-19, the punishment would be handed out at the next available opportunity.

The names of the high school prospects involved weren't released.
