Heisman Power Rankings: Haskins gunning for top spot after big win

We're five weeks into the college football season and Heisman contenders are beginning to separate from the pack.

The game's most important position entered the spotlight once again as a number of talented quarterbacks led their teams to impressive victories.

Here are the top five Heisman candidates after another exciting slate of games:

5. McKenzie Milton, QB - UCF

After finishing eighth in the 2017 Heisman vote, Milton has picked up where he left off this season. The signal-caller leads a dominant UCF offense thanks to accurate passing and sound decision making. This past week, Pittsburgh could only watch as Milton lit up the scoreboard and torched its secondary. The junior threw for 328 yards and accounted for six touchdowns (four through the air, two on the ground) en route to the Walter Camp Player of the Week award. Thanks to their quarterback, the Knights are in a position to run the table for a second straight season, a feat that would place Milton directly in the Heisman conversation.

4. Will Grier, QB - West Virginia

We feel bad for Grier. Saturday's victory over Texas Tech was another dominant performance from the senior, as he threw for 370 yards and three scores. In most seasons, the Mountaineers quarterback would be a Heisman favorite, as he leads an undefeated Power 5 contender. Unfortunately for Grier, there are just too many star-studded passers in the midst of historic campaigns. The productive pivot will surely hang around our top five for most of the year, barring a slip-up, and he'll get his chance to score signature wins and pad his resume in November.

3. Kyler Murray, QB - Oklahoma

How are defenses supposed to stop this man? After missing Oklahoma's' first series as punishment for being late to Friday's practice, Murray led a 66-33 demolition of Baylor Saturday, further cementing his status as a potential Heisman finalist. The redshirt junior accumulated a whopping 432 passing yards and six touchdowns versus the Bears, illustrating why the Sooners are legitimate playoff contenders this season. Murray is simply the most athletic weapon in college football, and his place among the nation's elite is well deserved.

2. Tua Tagovailoa, QB - Alabama

After dominating the top spot in recent weeks, Tagovailoa has been usurped. It's not entirely his fault - Alabama's offense is clearly a juggernaut that cannot be stopped, so the lefty's playing time has been limited. In the Crimson Tide's latest onslaught, this time over Louisiana, Tagovailoa attempted just eight passes. He did, however, make them count, completing all eight for 128 yards and two touchdowns. That sound you hear is opposing defensive coordinators crying. The sophomore quarterback will have every chance to regain the No. 1 spot in the coming weeks, but his lack of playing time ultimately hurt him this week.

1. Dwayne Haskins, QB - Ohio State

What a season its been thus far for Haskins. After a thrilling road victory over Penn State, it's hard to argue with the redshirt sophomore's Heisman resume. The Buckeye's passer didn't post his usual eye-popping stats against the Nittany Lions, but he engineered two touchdown drives to seal his team's second signature win of the campaign. Haskins has the numbers, as most elite quarterbacks do, but he possesses the clutch factor as well. Ohio State will match up with a few easier conference opponents in the coming weeks, so it may prove difficult to kick Haskins out of the top spot. He's just that good.
