LSU head football coach Ed Orgeron goes to intense lengths to fire his team up for early games.

Michael Casagrande of AL.com spoke to former Tigers players about what it's like to play for Orgeron, and several detailed a pregame routine that involves Red Bull and punching himself in the jaw.

"Before one of the games, he'll come down and drink a whole Red Bull, smashes it on his head, lifts off his shirt and he's punching himself in the jaw getting us ready, pumped up to play," former LSU quarterback Danny Etling, now with the New England Patriots, said. "That's Coach O for you."

Former LSU offensive lineman K.J. Malone, who announced his retirement from football Monday, witnessed Orgeron's strange routine last season before an 11 a.m. game against Arkansas.

"He walked in there and said 'it's time to set your jaw,'" Malone recalled. "And started punching himself in the jaw."

Toby Weathersby, another former LSU offensive lineman, added: "It's a real serious punch. Then he'll look at us and start growling. He'll give us a growl and you know what time it means. It's time to go win a ball game."
