Dykes to coach SMU in bowl game 9 days after hiring

Sonny Dykes will coach SMU in the Frisco Bowl on Dec. 20, giving him an extraordinarily short amount of time to prepare for the contest.
Dykes, who will bring some of his own staff members along for the game, was hired by the Mustangs on Monday and was introduced to the media as SMU's new leader on Tuesday.
He called his participation in the game a "necessity," according to Adam Grosbard of the Dallas Morning News. Rarely in the past has a new head coach participated in a team's bowl game.
Dykes spent the 2017 season as an assistant with TCU following a four-year run as the head coach at Cal. The Mustangs will take on another one of Dykes' former programs - Louisiana Tech - in the Frisco Bowl.
