Former Cal chief Sonny Dykes has agreed to become SMU's next head football coach, the program announced Monday.

"I can't tell you how excited I am to be introduced as the Head Coach at SMU," said Dykes, a native of Big Spring, Texas. "This is home and this is a program I grew up watching. I watched Mustang legends compete and I could always see myself putting on that iconic pony. Today, I'm proud to do just that."

Dykes was fired from Cal following the 2016 season after producing a 19-30 record over four seasons with the Golden Bears. He spent the last year working as an offensive analyst for TCU.

The 48-year-old head coach replaces Chad Morris, who was hired for Arkansas' top job last week. Dykes takes over a team that's coming off four straight losing seasons and a 7-5 record in 2017.
