Swinney blasts South Carolina fans for throwing debris at players on field
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was fuming Saturday after South Carolina fans threw debris onto the field, targeting his players at times during a 34-10 victory.
Swinney remained composed for most of the first half before fans almost struck his players on the sidelines with bottles and other projectiles. While protesting the fan behaviour, Swinney was given a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
"I shouldn't have lost my poise and my cool. But that's an embarrassment," Swinney said via ESPN's David M. Hale. "These people are better than that. And it's just a few people here - that's not a majority of these South Carolina people.
"That's an embarrassing situation right there. That's how somebody gets hurt."
Fans were launching debris onto the field prior to the start of the game and continued well into the first half, with one person striking a police officer with a beer can.
Clemson entered halftime with a 20-0 lead and scored 34 unanswered points before South Carolina got on the board, drawing further ire from the home crowd.
