Baylor's Rhule unfazed after 0-2 start: Process is 'going to be epic'

Back-to-back losses to Liberty and UTSA wasn't how Matt Rhule wanted to begin his tenure at Baylor, but the first-year coach hasn't lost any faith in the long-term vision of his program.

"I don't want to make excuses, but I didn't come here because I thought it was going to be a really easy job," the former Temple frontman told reporters after Saturday's shocking 17-10 loss to the Roadrunners, per Tyler Bouldin of KWTX. "I didn't come here saying to myself, boy, this will be fun, this will be easy. I came here saying this is going to be epic, this is going to be awesome, this is going to be a process."

Rhule is attempting to rebuild a Baylor program that was all but driven into the ground by the sexual assault scandal that surfaced publicly two years ago.

The Bears lost in his debut against Liberty, a school with almost zero football cache, and fell again Saturday night to UTSA, giving Rhule a nightmarish start to the season.

"You shouldn't have to go out there and play 14 freshmen. I shouldn't be playing a freshman center, but we are, and I'm proud to do it," an ubeat Rhule said of his youthful team. "I told the kids in there, I love these kids. These kids are warriors. I stand and fight with them. But I really believe God put me here not so things like this didn't happen, I think God put me here because things like this are going to happen."

After dropping a pair of home contests to begin the campaign, the Bears will travel to Duke for their final non-conference affair Sept. 16.
