3 Illinois players charged with home invasion, armed robbery
Illinois wide receiver Zarrian Holcombe, as well as offensive linemen Darta Lee and Howard Watkins, were arrested Wednesday morning on home invasion and armed robbery charges, according to online jail records obtained by ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
The incident allegedly took place inside a university dorm, and was reported to police at 3:21 a.m. All three of the arrested subjects are scheduled for arraignment Thursday.
"Darta Lee and Zarrian Holcombe were already suspended from team activities for violations of team rules, and will remain suspended," head coach Lovie Smith said in a statement. "Howard Watkins has been suspended indefinitely from team activities. These allegations, if true, fail to live up to the standards we expect of our student-athletes. We continue to gather information and will take appropriate steps based upon what we learn."
Holcombe and Lee were part-time players as freshmen in 2016, while Watkins enrolled in January and is set to enter his first year with the Fighting Illini.
