Rutgers receives NCAA notice of 7 potential violations

Rutgers has received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA regarding seven possible violations from the Kyle Flood era, the school confirmed Tuesday after a report from Keith Sargeant of nj.com.

The main charge is reportedly that Flood sought out a professor of former cornerback Nadir Barnwell in hopes of getting the player preferential academic treatment during 2014-15, sources told Sargeant.

Flood was suspended for three games during the 2015 season and fined $50,000 by the school after conducting its own investigation into the matter.

The former Scarlet Knights head coach is also accused of failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance, and Rutgers has been charged with failure to monitor.

Rutgers never named Flood in its release but did note that the additional charges concern: a former assistant coach having improper off-campus recruiting contact with a potential player, then misleading the NCAA and the school during the investigation; two hostesses having impermissible off-campus contact with potential student-athletes; and the school and the director of sports medicine violating Rutgers' drug testing policy.

Flood and athletic director Julie Hermann were fired following the 2015 campaign.

Rutgers has 90 days to respond to the allegations and any significant sanctions could be crippling for the team. Scarlet Knights head coach Chris Ash already has an uphill climb to get his squad out of the Big Ten basement, as Rutgers went winless in conference play this year, getting shut out four times.
