Western Kentucky filled the last vacant FBS head coaching position, naming Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford as head coach.

Sanford spent the last two seasons at Notre Dame, before spending one season at Boise State as offensive coordinator. Prior to Boise State, Sanford coached three seasons at Stanford in various capacities.

In 2010, Sanford coached at Western Kentucky, holding the title of passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Former head coach Jeff Brohm left the Hilltoppers for the same position at Purdue on Dec. 5, after leading Western Kentucky to a 30-10 record over three seasons.
