Report: Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer 'looks to be the guy' at QB

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

After DeShone Kizer performed so well in relief of Malik Zaire, who suffered a season-ending injury, the debate was on. Who will be the starting quarterback in 2016?

Just days into camp, it appears Kizer is the guy, according to ESPN's Kevin Carter, who played with Notre Dame defensive backs coach Todd Lyght.

Well, I actually spoke to my good buddy Todd Lyght ... and he told me just yesterday that DeShone Kizer looks to be the guy. Everything points to the fact that he runs the offense better. He has the arm strength to make every throw. He is a better pocket passer. And how Brian Kelly wants this offense to look, he is the guy. But, not so fast. Brian Kelly really likes the way this team responds to Malik Zaire. And Todd himself told me, he said, 'Look, man, when we're in practice, Zaire gives us fits with extending plays with his feet. He has the arm strength to make all the throws as well, but with him, you can change the launch point, you can do so many things, and he's just a nightmare to get off the field on third down.

Kizer appeared in every Notre Dame game last season, completing 63 percent of his passes for 2,884 yards and 21 touchdowns, while also adding 10 rushing touchdowns.

Zaire suffered a gruesome injury in Week 2 against Virginia after a dominating performance versus Texas in the opener.

Notre Dame faces the Longhorns on Sept. 3 at Texas.
