Drake bench boss Darian DeVries agreed to a five-year deal to become the next head coach of West Virginia, Mountaineers vice president and director of athletics Wren Baker announced Sunday.

"Coach DeVries is a phenomenal basketball coach and an even better person and possesses all the qualities we desired in the next leader of our men's basketball program," Baker said in a statement. "His teams play hard and smart and are efficient on both ends of the floor.

"He has proven to be a strong recruiter and developer of players but even more importantly, a leader with integrity who develops character in the young men he coaches."

DeVries has spent the past six years with the Bulldogs, guiding the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last four years. He holds a 150-55 overall record during his Drake tenure, finishing with at least 20 wins in each campaign.

DeVries' son, Tucker, is expected to follow him to Morgantown, adds Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.

The 48-year-old was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year on two occasions. He previously spent 17 years as an assistant at Creighton under Dana Altman and Greg McDermott.

DeVries replaces interim coach Josh Eilert, who went 9-23 during his lone season in charge at West Virginia.

Longtime Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins resigned and retired last summer following his DUI arrest.
