Murray State hires Steve Prohm for 2nd stint as head coach
Steve Prohm is returning for a second stint as Murray State's head coach, the school announced Friday.
Prohm rejoins the Racers after a six-season stint with Iowa State. The Cyclones dismissed Prohm following a dreadful 2-22 campaign which included an 0-18 record against Big 12 competition. He went 97-95 overall at Iowa State, helping his team qualify for the NCAA Tournament three times and win two conference tournaments.
"I have known coach Prohm since he arrived at Murray State University as an assistant coach. Not only is he a successful coach, but (he is also) a person of the highest integrity," Murray State president Dr. Bob Jackson said in a statement. "I am extremely happy for MSU, coach Prohm and his family, and our student-athletes. I look forward to this new era of Racer basketball."
The 47-year-old's most successful stretch of coaching came during his first run with Murray State from 2011 to 2015. Prohm amassed an impressive 104-29 record and led the Racers to a first-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference all four seasons he coached. Murray State also won a conference tournament and made the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
Murray State went 31-3 this past season under former bench boss Matt McMahon before being bounced from the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 32. LSU hired McMahon as its next head coach earlier this week.
