UMass hires Frank Martin as next head coach
UMass hired Frank Martin as the program's next men's basketball head coach, athletic director Ryan Bamford announced Friday.
Martin takes over for Matt McCall, who UMass dismissed after five seasons on the job. Martin's contract details aren't known.
"We are thrilled to welcome Frank, Anya, and the Martin family back to the Commonwealth to lead our proud basketball program," said Bamford. "This is an exciting time for Massachusetts basketball, our university, and all who follow and support the Minutemen.
"Under coach Martin's leadership, the future is bright for Massachusetts basketball."
The two sides initially met Tuesday, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Talks then continued late into Thursday night before agreeing to a deal, reports MassLive's Matt Vautour.
Martin owns a 288-201 career record. He previously coached for 10 seasons at South Carolina and five campaigns at Kansas State. The 56-year-old led the Gamecocks to a Final Four appearance in 2017 and guided the Wildcats to four NCAA Tournament berths.
St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt was also in the running for the UMass position before withdrawing from consideration, according to Vautour.
The Minutemen finished this past season ranked 10th in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 15-17 record.
