Kansas State is hiring longtime Baylor assistant Jerome Tang to be its next head coach, sources told Stadium's Jeff Goodman.

Tang, who has been Scott Drew's associate head coach since 2017, joined the Bears in 2003. He has four wins and zero losses in interim head coaching appearances for Baylor.

Amid rumblings linking Tang to Kansas State, Drew said Wednesday that he believes his top assistant was ready to take over his own program after 19 years together.

"I think, first and foremost, coach Tang has had opportunities in the past," Drew said, according to Arne Green of the Topeka Capital-Journal. "And people see that he does a great job and would be a great head coach.

"And the good thing is, he can be selective. He's never just taken something for money or because he wants to be a head coach. When he feels called to go somewhere, he's going to go, and definitely it'll be exciting for us."

The Wildcats were searching for a new bench boss after Bruce Weber resigned from the post following the team's first-round loss to West Virginia in the Big 12 Tournament earlier in March.

Under the Tang and Drew tandem, Baylor developed into a national powerhouse in the Big 12, culminating with its national title last year. The Bears also made the Sweet 16 in five of 10 NCAA Tournament appearances.
