Wednesday's men's basketball game between UMass and George Washington in Washington, D.C., was postponed after a curfew was imposed on the city amid violent protests at the U.S. Capitol.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a citywide curfew scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. ET and last until 6 a.m. on Thursday that will restrict any non-essential work or travel.

Thousands of President Donald Trump's supporters gathered in Washington on Wednesday as part of demonstrations tied to allegations the presidential election was stolen from the Republican nominee.

Congress voted earlier Wednesday to certify President-elect Joe Biden, sparking the protests in which a mob clashed with police prior to storming the U.S. Capitol. The joint session held to tabulate the votes from the Electoral College was halted as a result.

Several protesters were able to gain access to the U.S. Capitol, and Capitol Police ordered the evacuation of two buildings. Police inside the House chamber drew their guns as the mob breached security and attempted to break down doors that were barricaded by desks.

Despite losing both the popular and electoral college vote, Trump urged supporters to gather for a rally at the Ellipse on Wednesday to contest the election results.

One person was shot inside the U.S. Capitol, according to The New York Times.

Trump later tweeted a call for protestors to "remain peaceful" and added, "Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order - respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue."

The Pentagon announced that around 1,100 D.C. National Guard members were being deployed, according to The Associated Press.
