Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland suffered an elbow injury in the New York nightclub stabbing he was the victim of early Wednesday morning.

The Pacers released a statement, saying only that Copeland had suffered knife wounds to his abdomen and left elbow.

Copeland reportedly broke his elbow during the altercation and will require surgery, according to Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling, who "spoke to someone close to Chris Copeland."

ESPN's Chris Broussard reports that Copeland suffered a fractured elbow.

Copeland didn't get into a fight outside the Chelsea club, 1 OAK, Zwerling notes, but was attacked by a man who had approached him about a promotion. The man reportedly became violent when Copeland brushed him off, and pulled a knife on Copeland and his ex-fiancee, Katrine Saltara, when the latter tried to intervene.

Both are in a New York hospital in stable condition.

Hawks

Head coach Mike Budenholzer:

The events of (Wednesday) morning involving Pero (Antic) and Thabo (Sefolosha) were unfortunate as we never want to see our players put themselves in a potentially negative situation. We will continue to look into the facts of the incident but with the information and foundation that we currently have established, we will support them through this process. Otherwise it is a continuing legal matter and I will have no further comment.

Antic and Sefolosha:

As members of the Atlanta Hawks, we hold ourselves to a high standard and take our roles as professionals very seriously. We will contest these charges and look forward to communicating the facts of the situation at the appropriate time. We apologize to our respective families, teammates, and the Hawks organization for any negative attention this incident has brought upon them. We are unable to provide further comment as this is an ongoing legal matter.
