Kings edge Wolves despite 27 from Wiggins

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

The world got a glimpse of what an Andrew Wiggins-centric offense may look like on Thursday, and it's a really exciting proposition.

The Minnesota Timberwolves rookie dropped 27 points against the Sacramento Kings, falling just two points shy of tying his career-high. He shot 11-of-22 from the floor, added nine rebounds and four steals, flashing some impressive moves and his usual athleticism.

Unfortunately, it was also clear that Wiggins' shoulders aren't quite ready for an offense to be placed upon them yet. The Wolves lost the game 110-107 and were outscored by 10 points in Wiggins' 40 minutes.

That's more than okay, though. Wiggins is 19 and is on pace to be just the ninth teenager ever to average 30 minutes. He's not terribly efficient on offense yet, but he's solid defensively and is averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists. There's a great deal of potential here, and games like Thursday's are a great way for him to develop his offensive skills in a low-stakes environment. It's what rebuilding is all about - the Wolves fans should be optimistic.

Kings fans were given a little reason for optimism too, with the Kings winning on the road on the second night of a back-to-back. Even against the 5-26 Wolves, that's a positive, though at 14-19 it's long past the point of Kings fans thinking about the playoffs.

They may have found something with Derrick Williams in the starting lineup alongside DeMarcus Cousins, a smaller look new head coach Tyrone Corbin tried for the first time in the search for better starts to games. Williams had 17 points in his 31 minutes, while Cousins had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Cousins and Rudy Gay both fouled out in the fourth quarter, leaving the team's non-stars to close the win out. They struggled to do so, shooting just 1-of-5 in the game's final 2:47 after Cousins went out, but managed to hang on when Troy Daniels missed a potential game-tying buzzer-beater.
