Report: Pacers to sign Gal Mekel

Jerome Miron / USA Today Sports

With their roster rendered thin thanks to a handful of injuries, the Indiana Pacers are looking for help.

That help is coming in the form of point guard Gal Mekel, according to Marc Stein of ESPN. Stein reports that the Pacers are in the process of signing Mekel, who was waived by the Dallas Mavericks last week to make room for J.J. Barea.

The Pacers don't currently have an open roster spot, so they may be using a Disabled Player Exception granted from Paul George's injury to fit Mekel on the roster. It remains possible they could waive someone to maintain the exception, and Shayne Whittington has a non-guaranteed deal with a very small guarantee.

The Pacers could also receive a Hardship Exception from the league, as they have had at least four players miss at least three games in George, David West, George Hill and C.J. Watson.

It's unclear what the Pacers may have with Mekel. Already 26 years old, the Israel export played in just 31 games with Dallas as a rookie, averaging 2.4 points and two assists in 9.4 minutes.
