Grizzlies sign Hassan Whiteside to unguaranteed deal
The Memphis Grizzlies have signed center Hassan Whiteside to an unguaranteed contract for training camp, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Whiteside, a 7-foot big man with a 7-7 wingspan, has appeared in only 19 NBA games since being drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2010 draft. He hasn't logged a regular-season minute in more than two years.
Since his last NBA stint, Whiteside has played in the D-League, Lebanon and China, where he became one of the biggest stars in the CBA. The Marshall product also played for the Raptors' summer league team in Las Vegas earlier this year.
While Whiteside has great rim-protecting potential, he'll have to beat out Earl Clark, Luke Hancock and Patrick Christopher for the 15th and final guaranteed contract in Memphis, assuming the Grizzlies even want to add a 15th guaranteed deal.
If Whiteside does find a way to make the team, he'll slot in behind Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph, Kosta Koufos and Jon Leuer in the team's deep bigs rotation.
