USA Basketball confirms cuts of John Wall, Bradley Beal, Paul Millsap
And then there were 16.
Tuesday saw USA Basketball announce its updated roster, which confirmed that John Wall, Bradley Beal, and Paul Millsap have been cut from Team USA, as was reported on Monday night.
Those are obviously some big names to cut, particularly when you consider that all three players are poised to be Eastern Conference All-Stars this season, but such is the depth of Team USA.
Wall was a late invite to the squad's training camp in Las Vegas and always seemed likely to get the axe before Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, or Derrick Rose, whose form is being praised by coaches. Beal is only 21 and doesn't yet offer much more than what James Harden, DeMar DeRozan, or Klay Thompson bring to the table. And Millsap was only brought to the team's camp after Blake Griffin and Kevin Love withdrew their candidacies.
Four cuts still need to be made Team USA tips off their FIBA World Cup campaign on Aug. 29 against Finland, and it's possible that a final roster will be announced before the squad flies out to Spain on Aug. 23.
Regarding who will and won't make the final round of cuts, NBA.com's John Schumann seems to have an idea of what players are still fighting for a spot.
Tweeted this last night: I think it's Irving vs. Lillard, DeRozan vs. Hayward, & Cousins vs. Drummond vs. Plumlee for last 3 spots.
