Report: adidas lands No. 1 pick Andrew Wiggins, 'in ballpark' of Damian Lillard's $100M deal
It's not the big signing news everyone is waiting for, but at least someone signed somewhere.
Shoe company adidas has landed a major fish, signing No. 1 draft pick Andrew Wiggins to a shoe contract, according to a report from USA Today Sports.
From the report:
Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 pick overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the June draft, has reached a shoe and apparel deal with Adidas, a person familiar with the deal told USA TODAY Sports.
The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the deal until it was announced officially, which is expected Wednesday.
This has to be considered somewhat of an upset, even though adidas and Nike were said to be close throughout the process. Some scoffed when Wiggins even played for Kansas, an adidas school, and Wiggins met with the industry leader ahead of the NBA Draft.
Of course, money talks, and it sounds as if adidas backed up the Brinks truck, paying Wiggins in the "ballpark" of the enormous deal they gave Damian Lillard earlier this offseason.

In Wiggins, adidas doesn't have a sure-fire top name but one with a pretty strong likelihood to move some footwear. A No. 1 pick is a No. 1 pick, and Wiggins has immense upside if his offensive game can develop as some think it may.
Adding him to a stable that includes fellow top pick Dante Exum and established stars like Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose and Lillard gives adidas considerable second-tier weight to combat the LeBron James and Kevin Durant-led Nike brand and the Carmelo Anthony-led Jordan brand.
Plus, if Wiggins is a success, the Canadian market is theirs, right?
