Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham is expected to miss an extended period of time after being diagnosed with a collapsed lung, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

"There is some optimism that he's going to be back for the playoffs," Charania said Thursday on "Get Up."

The NBA playoffs begin April 18.

Cunningham, a two-time All-Star, has averaged 24.5 points and a career-high 9.9 assists per game this season. He exited Tuesday's game against the Washington Wizards early due to what the Pistons announced as back spasms.

The 24-year-old has 60 qualified games played this campaign, short of the 65 games required to be eligible for All-NBA selection, notes ESPN's Bobby Marks. Cunningham earned All-NBA third-team honors last season after averaging 26.1 points per game.

The Pistons, who lead the Eastern Conference with a 49-19 record, have 14 games left this season.
