Edgecombe's late 3-pointer gives 76ers 139-136 OT win over Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — VJ Edgecombe scored 25 points, including a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Philadelphia 76ers a 139-136 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in a tight game Tuesday night.

Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 34 points each, but it was Edgecombe, who suffered through foul trouble early, who carried Philadelphia through the fourth quarter, scoring 13 points in the period. His 25-footer clinched the win for Philadelphia, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Edgecombe was the third overall pick in the draft in June out of Baylor.

Ja Morant led Memphis with 40 points, including 18 in the fourth to bring Memphis back into the game. Cedric Coward finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds, career-highs in both as the Grizzlies lost their second in a row. Coward’s 3-point attempt to tie the game as time expired bounced off the front of the rim.

Santi Aldama and Jaren Jackson Jr. had 15 points each, and Jackson grabbed 12 rebounds.

Philadelphia took a 103-100 lead into the fourth, and Edgecombe gave the Sixers a 124-118 lead near the four-minute mark with a pair of 3-pointers and a drive. But Morant and the Grizzlies fought back to tie the game at 128 with just under one minute left.

That sent the game to overtime.

Both teams shot better than 50% in the first half, resulting in a high-scoring affair. But Memphis was stymied by 11 turnovers, which offset the Grizzlies connecting on nine of their 17 3-pointers.

All of that led to a 72-all tie at the break. Maxey scoring 24 points, while Embiid added 19.

CELTICS 129, JAZZ 119

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Derrick White scored 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and added a career-high seven blocks in a one-of-a-kind performance that carried Boston to a win over Utah.

White became the 13th player in NBA history to have 27 points, seven rebounds, six assists and seven blocks in a game. But he was the first guard — or member of the Celtics — to post that statistical combination.

Jaylen Brown had 23 points and 10 assists for Boston, ending his streak of 30-point games at nine. He remained tied with Celtics great Larry Bird, who had nine straight 30-point games in February and March of 1985.

Anfernee Simons scored 20 points and Payton Pritchard added 18 for the Celtics, who have won five of six.

Keyonte George, listed as questionable with an illness until a couple of hours before tipoff, scored 37 points for the Jazz. Jusuf Nurkic had a season-high 26 and Lauri Markkanen added 22.

PISTONS 128, LAKERS 106

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James scored 17 points on his 41st birthday, but Cade Cunningham had 27 points and 11 assists while leading Detroit to a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

James hit three 3-pointers and added four assists and four rebounds in the 1,577th regular-season game of his unprecedented 23rd season, but he spent the final minutes of his birthday game sitting with his arms folded on the bench while watching the conclusion of the Lakers’ fourth loss in five games.

The top scorer in league history is the 12th player to appear in an NBA game at 41 or older — just the sixth in this century.

Marcus Sasser scored a season-high 19 points and Isaiah Stewart had 15 for the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons, who snapped their two-game skid to finish 3-2 on their West Coast trip.

Detroit won its third straight meeting with the Lakers despite losing third-leading scorer Tobias Harris to a left hip sprain in the first quarter.

Luka Doncic had 30 points and 11 assists for the Lakers, who have lost four of five for the first time since last season’s playoffs. Jaxson Hayes had 13 points, but the Lakers couldn’t match up defensively with the hard-nosed Pistons.

CLIPPERS 131, KINGS 90

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Kawhi Leonard scored 33 points and the Los Angeles Clippers extended their winning streak to a season-best five games with a victory over Sacramento.

James Harden had 21 points while John Collins and rookie Yanic Konan Niederhauser each added 16 for the Clippers, who have found a successful formula after not winning more than two consecutive games before their current run of success began.

Leonard’s productive night came after he scored a career-best 55 points in a victory over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday. He has averaged 37.8 points over the past five games.

Los Angeles’ win streak started on the same night center Ivica Zubac went down with a left ankle sprain. Zubac has not played in any of the past four games.

Nique Clifford scored 18 points while Maxime Raynaud and Russell Westbrook each had 12 for the Kings, who fell to 3-12 since Nov. 26. Raynaud also grabbed 12 rebounds, but Sacramento lost its fifth consecutive road game.
