Report: Suns hiring Cavs assistant Ott as next head coach
The Phoenix Suns are hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott to be their next head coach, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.
Ott was one of two finalists for the position alongside fellow Cavs assistant Johnnie Bryant.
Like Bryant, Ott was one of several additions to the Cavaliers' staff this past season under Kenny Atkinson. Together, they helped Cleveland win 64 games and finish atop the Eastern Conference for the first time since 2016.
Ott has never been a head coach in the NBA but has a lengthy resume in the league. His first role behind the bench was in 2012, when he worked as a video coordinator for the Atlanta Hawks under Mike Budenholzer - the man he'll reportedly replace in Phoenix. In 2016, he took up his first gig as an assistant when he began a six-year stint with the Brooklyn Nets, during which he first worked under Atkinson. He was also an assistant on the Los Angeles Lakers during Darvin Ham's two-year window in charge.
Suns star Devin Booker, who reportedly contributed to the team's coaching search in recent weeks, had Ott as his top choice for Phoenix's next head coach, sources told Charania.
