Draymond fueled by Wizards hecklers: 'They got me going'
Draymond Green had six points while his Golden State Warriors were tied with the lowly Washington Wizards heading into the fourth quarter before an unlikely source motivated the four-time All-Star.
Two Wizards fans sitting near the scorer's table heckled the Warriors, specifically Green, all game, which didn't go unnoticed by the always-fiery forward.
"I had nothing going. I couldn't find it. Wasn't about to find it," Green told The Athletic's Anthony Slater after the game. "But shoutout to them. Two of them, they got me going."
In the fourth quarter, Green exploded for 11 points, including two 3-pointers. He added four of his team-leading 10 assists in the frame as well, helping the Warriors escape Washington with a 127-118 victory.
"He kept saying, like, 'You think you a Hall of Famer? I better not ever hear you say that again,'" Green recounted one fan saying.
Stephen Curry, who went off for a game-high 41 points, has played with Green long enough to know that even a couple of screaming spectators can trigger a triumphant effort.
"It got Draymond going," Curry said. "Every time he hit a shot, you knew who he was looking at."
He added, "We always love engaged Draymond, no matter who puts the gas in the tank."
While the 22-22 Warriors still have a ways to go in bouncing back from a tough start to the season, Monday's win was big. The team is beginning a stretch against four top-tier playoff teams in a row: The Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets, and Memphis Grizzlies.
Regardless of how the Warriors fare over that span, they can thank the two Wizards fans for a little added motivation on Monday.
"I think everyone on our team heard the guy on the sideline talking," Green said. "Everyone, including our coaches, were like, 'Draymond, shut him up.' It wasn't just me that fed off that. I think everyone fed off that. Shoutout to that guy."
