Report: Rockets, John Wall heading toward split

The Houston Rockets will meet with point guard John Wall this week to discuss his potential exit ahead of the start of free agency June 30, The Athletic's Kelly Iko reports.

While trade packages involving Wall have been discussed, he'll likely have the remainder of his contract bought out. Wall recently exercised his $47.4-million player option for the 2022-23 season.

The 31-year-old floor general hasn't played for Houston since April 23, 2021. He only appeared in 40 games during the 2020-21 season before sitting out the entirety of 2021-22 while the Rockets looked to move him, which proved challenging because of his contract.

The Rockets are set to enter another rebuilding year, albeit with a fresh crop of young talents following the 2022 draft. Houston selected Auburn forward Jabari Smith with the No. 3 pick and also acquired defensive stalwart Tari Eason and guard TyTy Washington. They're set to join a young core headlined by last year's No. 2 pick, Jalen Green.

Houston finished the 2021-22 season with the NBA's worst record at 20-62.
