Unvaccinated players who face the Toronto Raptors on the road will be subject to Canada's strict quarantine rules, with fines and jail time for those found in violation, the NBA warned teams on Wednesday, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Violators of Canada's Quarantine Act would face up to six months in jail and a $750,000 fine, Charania notes.

To facilitate the Raptors' return after playing in Tampa, Fla. in 2020-21, the Canadian government granted a National Interest Exemption to allow both vaccinated and unvaccinated NBA players to enter the country without being subject to its mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

All players must still register negative COVID-19 tests prior to entering Canada. However, once in the country, unvaccinated NBA players need to stay within their team's hotel, except for games and practices at Scotiabank Arena.

As of Wednesday, 96% of the league's players have been vaccinated, outgoing players association director Michele Roberts told The Athletic's Kavitha A. Davidson.
