The NBA's board of governors has approved a change to rules regarding late-game out-of-bounds violations in a move the league hopes will improve game flow.
Officials will no longer initiate out-of-bounds reviews in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime, the league announced Wednesday. Instead, a team can now use its coach's challenge to trigger a review in those scenarios.
The board of governors approved the new rules following a recommendation from the NBA's competition committee. The committee includes players, coaches, team owners, front-office executives, and game officials.
As with most changes to the NBA rule book, the new out-of-bounds review process will first be implemented on a one-year trial basis.
