Mavericks, Doncic agree to 5-year, $207M max rookie extension
The Dallas Mavericks and franchise headliner Luka Doncic agreed to a five-year, $207-million maximum rookie contract extension, the team announced.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban, team legend Dirk Nowitzki, and head coach Jason Kidd were among a delegation that flew to Doncic's hometown of Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Monday to finalize the deal.
"Today is a dream come true. ... I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks and appreciate the support of my fans," Doncic said after agreeing to his extension, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The agreement comes days after Doncic guided Slovenia to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics. Doncic finished third in scoring (23.8), second in rebounds (9.7), and first in assists (9.5), earning a selection to FIBA's Team of the Tournament.
The 22-year-old enters his fourth season with the Mavs on the heels of a second straight All-NBA first-team nod and his second successive selection as a Western Conference All-Star starter.
Doncic averaged 27.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 8.6 assists last season with Dallas. Those numbers are all slightly below his career marks, though he did improve both his field-goal shooting (48%) and 3-point returns (35%) in leading the Mavericks to finish fifth in the West.
Doncic becomes the third player to sign a scaled max rookie extension this summer, joining Atlanta Hawks All-Star Trae Young (five years, $207 million) and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (five years, $172 million).
