Doc would be 'very surprised' if Williams doesn't suit up

Los Angeles Clippers guard Lou Williams previously stated that he was "50-50" on returning to play this season, but head coach Doc Rivers expects to have the veteran at his disposal when the NBA resumes action.

"As far as Lou, all indications (are) that yes, he is (playing)," Rivers told reporters on a Zoom call Wednesday, including ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "Obviously, up until we get on the plane, anything can happen. But I do expect Lou to be with us. I would be very surprised if he's not."

Rivers added that he doesn't believe any other Clippers players are considering opting out, but the coach said he will support anyone who chooses not to participate in the league's restart.

"There are so many reasons for everybody to play but there are also very valid reasons for guys to opt out," Rivers said. "I don't think many will. I think they are all invested in what we are trying to do. But again, you don't hold it against anyone on any team. This is extraordinary times and we just have to support each other."

Williams has been questioning if suiting up amid the coronavirus pandemic and potentially distracting from the Black Lives Matter movement is the right call. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year has been a valuable member of the Clippers' reserve unit, averaging 18.7 points and 5.7 assists across 60 appearances this season.

The 33-year-old has also formed a potent pick-and-roll tandem with backup center Montrezl Harrell.
