Ja Morant is putting his body first.

The Memphis Grizzlies rookie turned down an invitation to participate in the Slam Dunk contest, reports Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.

Morant recently said he was considering participating in the event. However, the high-flying guard is reportedly prioritizing his health after experiencing back spasms earlier in the season, according to Haynes.

Morant has not ruled out competing in the dunk contest in the future, sources told Haynes.

The 20-year-old ball-handler is currently the favorite for the Rookie of the Year award. He's averaging 18 points, 6.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and one steal in 29.7 minutes per game. He's also shooting 40.7% on 2.3 threes per contest.

The Slam Dunk contest is scheduled for Feb. 15 in Chicago. Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard was reported to be one of the confirmed participants; however, he poured cold water on those rumors on Jan. 8, telling reporters "I never said I was doing the dunk contest," according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. appeared to be confirmed for the event when the Heat alluded to him receiving a perfect score earlier this month.

Howard's teammate Anthony Davis and retiring Atlanta Hawks veteran Vince Carter have denied they will participate in the contest.
