The Detroit Pistons are waiving veteran swingman and seven-time All-Star Joe Johnson, a source told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Johnson signed a partially guaranteed deal with the Pistons in September after an MVP season in the BIG3.

Detroit reportedly plans to use two of its final roster spots on Christian Wood and the development of second-year guard Khyri Thomas, Wojnarowski adds.

Johnson's contract would've guaranteed him $1.37 million in salary if he remained on the roster by 5 p.m. ET on Monday, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks. Instead, the Pistons will take a $220,000 cap hit.

Though he was voted as the best player in the BIG3 this past season, Johnson hadn't played in an NBA game since appearing in the 2018 playoffs with the Houston Rockets. The 38-year-old was said to be recently experiencing swelling in his Achilles tendon, although tests on the ailment came back clean, according to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes.
