Vogel plans to stagger LeBron, Rondo as Lakers' primary point guards

LeBron James will get his chance as the Los Angeles Lakers' main shot-caller.

Lakers head coach Frank Vogel discussed his intentions for the team's point guard duties next season, revealing he intends to separate James and Rajon Rondo at times in order to let them both own the one spot.

"It's going to be important that we stagger Rajon and LeBron," Vogel told ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "And let each of them have their turn running the show. Being the primary ball-handler out there.

"And obviously, they're going to play a ton together as well. But staggering those guys is on my mind as well."

Vogel's plan for the position falls in line with a report from July that stated James and new signing Danny Green would open the season as the Lakers' starting backcourt.

James running the point for stretches isn't a foreign concept, though he would still share the court with a traditional point guard.

Despite the presence of both Rondo and Lonzo Ball, the 34-year-old occasionally ran the offense last season in his first year with the Lakers. He also did it in previous stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, where he split duties with Kyrie Irving and Mario Chalmers, among others.

James, though, isn't interested in specific labels.

"It doesn't matter to me," he said. "I do whatever it takes for us to win. So it doesn't matter. I'm a ballplayer. I'm not a point guard, I'm not a shooting guard, a small forward, power forward, or a center. I'm just a ballplayer.

"You put me on the floor, and I can make things happen with whoever is on the floor. So, I'm just looking forward to getting out there with my teammates because it's exciting. It's fun."
