Nene will miss Rockets camp after re-injuring adductor
Veteran center Nene will not be with the Houston Rockets during training camp after re-injuring his adductor, the team announced Friday.
The 37-year-old Brazilian has been with Houston for the past three seasons after spending most of his career with the Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards. Since 2016-17, Nene has averaged 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game.
Nene and the Rockets made headlines earlier this month after the league deliberated the legality of his new contract structure. The team inked the big man to a two-year, $20-million pact that features a base salary of just $2.6 million per season. The rest of the contract is comprised of so-called "likely" bonuses, which will be paid out depending on how many games Nene plays and how the Rockets perform as a team.
The NBA reportedly ruled that these bonuses will not count as outgoing or incoming salary for trade purposes. The Rockets had presumably hoped those bonuses would count for trade purposes when they offered Nene a rather lavish contract for someone his age with declining production.
