Marc jokes Grizzlies could trade for Pau to keep Gasols in Memphis
For as long as there has been NBA basketball in Tennessee, there has been a Gasol on the Memphis Grizzlies' roster.
"I know, that's pretty crazy, this whole ride there has been a Gasol at the media day at least," Marc Gasol said, according to The Daily Memphian's Geoff Calkins. "That's pretty impressive. My son is only two ... But maybe I'll get traded to (the) San Antonio (Spurs) and Pau comes back, who knows?
"That would be kind of funny. There's a part of me that would like that. He still has a place here, the same place; my parents live in it. My parents have been here the whole ride."
The Grizzlies acquired Pau Gasol in a draft-day trade with the Atlanta Hawks after relocating from Vancouver following the 2000-01 season. While Pau developed into the Rookie of the Year and an eventual All-Star, Marc attended high school in Memphis.
When Pau - now a member of the Spurs - was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2007-08 season, the Grizzlies' haul included his little brother, then a lightly regarded second-round pick yet to make his NBA debut. The younger Gasol would end up surpassing his brother to become the franchise's all-time leader in points, rebounds, and blocks.
With the Grizzlies putting 34-year-old Marc on the block ahead of the Feb. 7 trade deadline, the Gasols' nearly two-decade run as the backbone of the organization might be coming to an end. The family's relationship with the city of Memphis, though, will surely endure.
