Few details have been released about "Space Jam 2," but the film's director, Terence Nance, expects it to make a big impact when it hits theaters.

"Pretty sure (it's) going to disrupt everything," Nance told Taylor Hosking of Vice. "I'm excited about what ... that movie can be."

Nance, whose work includes the HBO series "Random Acts of Flyness," said he'd been spreading the word that he was interested in directing "Space Jam 2" long before producer Ryan Coogler ("Black Panther") contacted him about it. "The Fast and the Furious" director Justin Lin was initially in talks to helm the film.

"'Space Jam' is a very unique opportunity because LeBron James is the best basketball player on Earth and a once in a generation performer," Nance explained. "Whoever the greatest basketball player of the next generation is going to be, they are probably not going to also be a great actor."

He added, "Growing up being an animator, someone who loves to draw, I'm just super enthused to work in the cannon, learning in a more deep way about it, bringing what I bring from a media innovation standpoint."

Filming on "Space Jam 2" is slated to begin during the NBA offseason.
