Redick booed in China months after saying tongue-tied slur
Spectators booed Philadelphia 76ers guard JJ Redick during the team's preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks in Shanghai on Friday.
"It was the most polite booing that I've ever received in my life," Redick said after the game, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon. "I mean, they booed and they cheered. It was like, 'We're mad at you, but we appreciate the way you shoot a basketball.'"
The booing was a response to an incident in February when the veteran sharpshooter accidentally uttered a racist slur during a promotional video meant to wish fans a happy Chinese New Year.
Redick apologized for the incident, saying he was "tongue-tied" and didn't realize how his remarks sounded on the recording. Chinese-American NBA player Jeremy Lin came to Redick's defense in the aftermath, saying he talked to Redick and "truly (believes) he didn't say a racial slur and that he has a great deal of respect towards Chinese people."
"The whole thing, it was a very unfortunate situation," Redick said on Friday. "I'm just deeply, deeply remorseful for offending so many people."
Despite the reaction from the crowd, however, Redick produced one of the most impressive performances of his career, scoring 28 points on 10-of-10 shooting, including 7-of-7 from the 3-point line, with four assists, one steal, and zero turnovers in 22 minutes.
