If the history of the NBA.com rookie survey is any indication, both DeAndre Ayton and Collin Sexton should be pessimistic about their chances of taking home Rookie of the Year honors in 2018-19.
Since the survey's inception in 2007, only once has the eventual Rookie of the Year winner been correctly projected by that year's class.
Year | NBA Rookie of the Year pick | Team(s) | Percentage of votes % | ROTY winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2007-08 | Kevin Durant | SuperSonics | 53.5 | Kevin Durant |
2009-10 | Blake Griffin | Clippers | 55 | Tyreke Evans |
2010-11 | John Wall | Wizards | 39 | Blake Griffin |
2012-13 | Anthony Davis | Hornets | 47.1 | Damian Lillard |
2013-14 | C.J. McCollum/Victor Oladipo | Trail Blazers/Magic | 24.2 | Michael Carter-Williams |
2014-15 | Jabari Parker | Bucks | 52.8 | Andrew Wiggins |
2015-16 | Jahlil Okafor | 76ers | 41.9 | Karl-Anthony Towns |
2016-17 | Kris Dunn | Timberwolves | 29 | Malcolm Brogdon |
2017-18 | Dennis Smith Jr. | Mavericks | 26 | Ben Simmons |

While Griffin received more than half the votes from his peers in 2009, a left knee injury kept him red-shirted for the entire regular season. He made his debut in 2010-11 and was unanimously selected as Rookie of the Year then.
