The longtime split between Chris Webber and the University of Michigan may be coming to an end.

The former Wolverines basketball and NBA star has accepted an invitation from Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh to be an honorary captain next season. Harbaugh called into WTKA radio's "The M Zone" show on Friday while Webber was a guest, and made the offer.

"Coach, you know that's no problem," Webber said, according to The Detroit News' Angelique S. Chengelis. "I definitely am honored ... I'm definitely going to be a part of it."

Webber has avoided association with the university and his former "Fab Five" teammates since his NCAA-mandated 10-year ban from the school ended in 2013. The ban was a result of the fallout from the Ed Martin scandal, which tied Webber to a former Michigan booster and resulted in his guilty plea for criminal contempt in 2003.

The scandal resulted in the vacating of the Fab Five's two storied Final Four appearances in the early 1990s. Webber had joined with Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson to form one of the most memorable teams in college basketball history, one with a significant cultural impact off the floor.

Rose, Howard, King, and Jackson weren't involved in the Martin scandal, and have an existing relationship with Michigan. Webber and Rose have sniped at each other publicly over the last few years, including when Webber refused to participate in an ESPN "30 for 30" about the Fab Five era.
