Jazz's Mitchell breaks rookie record for most 3-pointers in a season

Joe Camporeale / USA TODAY Sports

After hitting his 186th 3-pointer of the season, Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell surpassed Portland Trail Blazers All-Star Damian Lillard for most threes scored by a rookie.

The 3-pointer occurred with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter against the Golden State Warriors to give the Jazz a 37-point lead. Utah went on to win the game by 40 and were led by Mitchell's 22 points. He hit eight of his 12 shots.

Mitchell has now hit 186 of his 542 3-point attempts, leaving him at a fairly inefficient 34.3 percent on the season. However, he has the opportunity to become the first rookie to average 20-plus points per game since Blake Griffin in 2011 (minimum 41 games played) and has taken control of the Jazz offense, helping them win 28 of their last 33 games.

Utah (48-33) is currently fourth in the Western Conference and have clinched a playoff spot.
